Every human being is wounded. Some of us are wounded by sins committed against us — injustices, abuse, violations of our human rights and/or our dignity as children of God. Some of our wounds are self-inflicted — wounds that stem from our own pride, anger, lust, envy, etc. There may be times when we feel that we will always be wounded, that our wounds can never be really healed. And maybe, from a purely human standpoint, they cannot be fully healed.
But God can heal all wounds. Yes, even the deepest and most painful wounds. Can God heal wounds from abortion? Yes, He can! Even if we think that our past will always haunt us, that the pain of the loss of our children will never be healed, Almighty God can heal that wound as well.
Isaiah the prophet says:
“For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and by his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53: 2-6)
Listen to those words again: “By his wounds, we are healed.” When Jesus Christ suffered upon the Cross, He did so in order to save us from our sins, but also to heal our wounds. Does that mean that there will be no traces, no memories of our wounds? No, but as Jesus appeared to His apostles in the upper room, and showed them the marks of His wounds — His transformed and glorified wounds — so He wants to transform and glorify our wounds! Our bodies will be “made like His glorious body,” as another Scripture says.
How does Jesus heal our wounds? First of all, we need to acknowledge that we are, in fact, wounded. If we think: “Oh, I got saved, Jesus died for me on the cross, so that’s all there is to it,” then we are not giving Him full access to our lives to bring us healing. In the Gospels, Jesus forgave some people their sins. He gave physical healing to others. And to some, He gave both. Do not imagine that God wants to save you, but still leave you raw and hurting from the wounds of your past! No, we must acknowledge that we are wounded, and that Jesus is the only healer. Then we need to go to Him, asking Him to be our Divine Healer. This is where Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats come in: each retreat is an opportunity for us to open our hearts, souls and lives to Jesus Christ the Healer, to give Him full access to heal our wounds — to transform and glorify our wounds!
